Selling Brunswick Co., NC & Horry Co., SC
Calabash andCarolina Shores, NCCalabash is a quaint fishing village fronting the banks of the Calabash River where it joins the Intracoastal Waterway and is the last town on the coast in the state of North Carolina. Because of the abundance of fresh seafood, Calabash has been famous for its "Calabash" style seafood restaurants for many years. Once known as "The Seafood Capital of the World" Maybe self-proclaimed, although it was estimated in the 80’s that the 21 seafood restaurants served 1.25 million people a year. There are still four of the original restaurants along the picturesque waterfront with absolutely beautiful views. One newcomer on the block, Boundary House, boasts fresh fish like Grouper and Wahoo, caught by one of the owners, then deliciously prepared and served the same day. From the Calabash waterfront the avid fisherman can take a charter boat for a day's deep sea fishing or, if you'd rather, there are sight-seeing boats available also. A quick stroll from the waterfront will find you on the main street of town, Beach Drive, with more fabulous restaurants, gift stores, shopping and even miniature golf. It is not just a "rumor" that Jimmy Durante visited this small seaside town and loved the local fried seafood. He did indeed refer to it in the closing of his act every night with the famous, "Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, where ever you are!" Some people say he was referring to the matriarch of a local seafood family, Mrs. Lucy Coleman of Coleman’s Original Restaurant. There seems to be a mystery to this story which no one will ever know since both parties are now deceased and neither spoke of it much. There are condos within walking distance of the main attractions including a new development on the Calabash River. Kingfish Bay is boasting gorgeous town homes with attached garages for permanent homes and smaller condos starting with 2 bedrooms for a vacation get-away. The community will offer some riverfront amenities as well. There are a number of other subdivisions within the city limits and several which are part of their extra-territorial areas. These include Saltaire Village, Calabash Acres, Village Green, Hunters Trace, Hidden Valley, Bonaparte I & II, Landing Two, Oak Ridge Plantation and the lovely new "retro" village on the banks of the Calabash River called Devaun Park. There is literally something here for everyone. Carolina Shores is a sister city to Calabash sharing the border on a cozy basis back-to-back. The citizens of both towns shop, eat, buy gas, etc. from each other on a daily basis. Carolina Shores is one of the earlier golf course developments in Brunswick County and dates back to the early 70's. Noted for its stately trees and natural setting, Carolina Shores remains a popular residential community with older well-kept homes on larger home sites with lush mature landscaping and meandering streets and cul-de-sacs. The town has a number of lovely communities both within the town limits as well as its extra-territorial areas. Some of those include Cedar Tree, Ocean Forest, Carolina Shores North, The Village at Calabash, Oceanside Place and The Farm. Each neighborhood offers a unique variety of homes and amenities to almost every prospective citizen. Commercial businesses in the town so far include a major grocery chain, sandwich shop, Italian Restaurant, medical offices, coffee shop and bakery, and computer services There are plans at this time for a new shopping center on Hwy. 17 called Carolina Crossing to be built in the very near future offering even more convenient goods and services. Both of these small communities share some great golf courses, too. Carolina Shores, Brunswick Plantation, Crow Creek, Meadowlands, Farmstead and The Thistle. Also nearby are The Pearl, Sandpiper Bay, Sea Trail, Jaguar's Lair, Ocean Ridge & Oyster Bay. Just over the state line, which Calabash shares with Little River, SC are several more great golf courses including Glen Dornoch, Heather Glen and River Hills There are also numerous beaches within a few miles of both towns. Probably the beach of choice, and closest, for most residents is Sunset Beach. Calabash and Sunset Beach share the city limit line and it is only a few minutes from either Calabash or Carolina Shores to the beach. Other beaches closeby are Ocean Isle and Holden Beach. It is only a bare 10 to 15 minute drive to Cherry Grove Beach in North Myrtle Beach, SC and only a few more beyond that to Myrtle Beach with its plentiful entertainment.
